Monthly Magazines have opened a way for every kind of inquiry and information. The intelligence
and discussion contained in them are very extensive and various; and they have been the means of
diffusing a general habit of reading through the nation, which, in a certain degree hath enlarged the
public understanding. HERE, too, are preserved a multitude of useful hints, observations, and facts,
which otherwise might never have appeared.-Dr. Kippis.

WE have now completed sixteen volumes of the ATHENEUM, and feel that it is a tribute, justly due to our subscribers and the publick, to express our sincere gratitude for eight years' constant and liberal patronage. We have endeavoured to discharge our duty with fidelity, and the persevering favour of an enlightened community has cheered us with the hope that our exertions have, in some considerable degree, attained their object, which was, to afford pleasure, amusement, and instruction. The establishment and continuance of such a work have been attended with considerable expense, besides the usual disbursements for publication; and the task of examining a great variety of valuable English publications, in order to make an agreeable selection for our readers, has been a duty of labour; but we confess, there is a satisfaction in the discharge of such a duty, independent of the pecuniary remuneration awarded us by our patrons, from a course of reading abounding in novelty and information.

It is therefore with regret, from many considerations, that we now resign into other hands, our pleasing task, and, as we trust, that support, which has hitherto been bestowed on the Atheneum. Being necessarily engaged in various branches of printing, which require our undivided attention, we find it impossible to devote that time and care to "The Spirit of the English Magazines" which fidelity to our subscribers, and a regard to the utility of our publication would require. The transfer has been made to a gentleman, whose judgment, industry, and other qualifications are such as to warrant us in saying, that it will be, in every respect, as worthy of the patronage of our friends as ever. Whatever improvements he may make, it is not intended to alter the nature of the work, or the plan of publication; and new subscribers may be accommodated with the First and Second Volumes of the New Series, by John Cotton, Esq. the future editor.

We now take a respectful and grateful leave of our friends. We thank them for their candour, their encouragement, and in most instances, for their punctuality.

Boston, March 15, 1825.

MUNROE

FRANCIS,
