THE little village of Ferncliffe is pleasantly situated at the foot of a beautiful hill thickly studded with trees. From the south and west of the village spread away into the blue distance the rich meadow-lands which abound in Devonshire. The monotony of the landscape is varied by a silver stream, which

"Winds about and in and out,

With here a blossom sailing;
And here and there a lusty trout,
And here and there a grayling ;"
