27. Local School Boards shall exercise the same functions with regard to evening schools within the several school districts as in the case of day schools, except in the matter of excusing the absences of teachers and of transferring teachers from school to school. (As amended March 24, 1909.) EVENING HIGH SCHOOLS *SEC. 56. 1. The by-laws of the Board of Education governing evening elementary schools shall be equally applicable to evening high schools except when otherwise specifically provided. (This subdivision was adopted March 24, 1909.) 2. Evening high schools shall begin their sessions on the third Monday in September, and shall continue for thirteen weeks; the second term shall begin on the day on which the day schools resume sessions in the month of January, and continue for such period as the Board of Education, on the recommendation of the Committee on Special Schools, shall determine. (As amended July 9, 1906, and March 24, 1909.) 3. Each evening session shall be divided into two parts of one hour each, and no pupil shall be permitted to enter a classroom later than five minutes after the time for beginning instruction. (As amended March 24, 1909.) 4. In accordance with regulations to be made by the Board of Superintendents, pupils may be permitted to receive instruction for but one hour each evening, or for a less number of evenings per week than the entire number of sessions. (This subdivision was adopted March 24, 1909.) 5. To be eligible for admission to an evening high school, applicants must possess such qualifications as the Board of Superintendents may determine. (This subdivision was adopted March 24, 1909.) 6. Junior teachers and laboratory assistants may be nominated by the Board of Superintendents for appointment by the Board of Education in place of assistant teachers when such nominations and appointments are deemed necessary or advisable. Teachers *This section was re-enacted in amended form on March 24, 1909. may ay be assigned to service by the Board of Superintendents for one hour of the evening school session or for such number of evenings per week as may be deemed necessary or advisable by the Committee on Special Schools. When the average attendance of any class for the period of two weeks shall be less than fifteen per hour, the Committee on Special Schools shall have power to discontinue such class and to dispense with the services of the teacher. (As amended March 24, 1909.) VACATION SCHOOLS AND PLAYGROUNDS SEC. 57. 1. Vacation schools and playgrounds shall be established and conducted in such school buildings and other places as the Committee on Special Schools, upon the recommendation of the Board of Superintendents, may determine. 2. Vacation schools and playgrounds shall be opened on the Monday following July 4, in each year, or on such date prior thereto as shall be determined by the Committee on Special Schools, and shall continue for such period as may be determined by said Committee. (As amended May 27, 1903.) 3. Nominations of supervisors, principals, teachers and assistants shall be made to the Board not later than the first regular meeting in May. (As amended November 22, 1905, and July 8, 1907.) 4. The sessions of the vacation schools and playgrounds shall be as follows: For vacation schools, from 9 A.M. to 12 M., for five days in each week; for playgrounds, from 1 to 5.30 P.M., for six days in each week; for evening playcentres, from 7.30 to 10 o'clock. The Committee on Special Schools shall have power, in its discretion, to open school buildings for such part of the morning hours as it may deem proper. (As amended February 25, 1903.) 5. All members of the supervising force in vacation schools, vacation playgrounds and recreation centres shall make such reports, and all the members of the supervising and teaching force in said schools shall perform such duties as the Superintendent in charge may, with the approval of the Board of Superintendents, direct. The Committee on Special Schools shall have power to make additional rules and regulations for the government of vacation schools and playgrounds. 17. During the week previous to the opening of the session, inspectors, supervisors and principals shall visit each school building in which a vacation school, or playground, or recreation centre is to be conducted, and shall report to the Superintendent in charge the condition of the building, supplies, etc. (As amended July 8, 1907.) 18. All nominations of supervisors, principals, teachers, assistants, and all other members of the supervising and teaching staff in vacation schools, vacation playgrounds, and recreation centres shall be made by the Board of Superintendents in order of standing from the appropriate eligible lists prepared by the Board of Examiners; provided, however, that the Board of Superintendents may consider for each appointment the three persons whose names are highest on the appropriate eligible list. It shall be the duty of the supervising teachers of the vacation schools and the inspectors of playgrounds and recreation centres, under the direction of the Superintendent assigned to vacation schools and playgrounds, to hold conferences with teachers of special branches, direct and inspect the work of the same, and see that the classes are properly supplied with required material. The inspectors of playgrounds and recreation centres shall also perform such duties as the City Superintendent shall direct. (As amended July 8, 1907.) 20. ATHLETIC FIELDS-SCHOOL FIELD DAYS SEC. 57a. The City Superintendent of Schools may, upon the application of the principal of any high school or elementary school, permit such school to have a School Field Day once in each year (on a school day or on a Saturday or other holiday), upon which to hold its athletic games and to demonstrate its efficiency in athletics, on one of the athletic fields assigned for such purpose by the Director of Physical Training, under the direction of the Committee on Athletic Fields. Pupils taking part in or attending the exercises on such field day shall be those in grade 4A or higher grades. Teachers of classes participating in field day exercises shall attend the same as a part of their regular school duty; but this provision shall not apply to teachers of mixed classes unless such classes are excused in their entirety from regular school work in order to take part in or attend such exercises.
